Adventure Boy Cheapskate DX

Developer: Paul Georghiou, Jeremy Swanson
Publisher: Paul Georghiou
Release Date: December 7, 2018
Genres: Adventure

Adventure Boy Cheapskate DX is the definitive expanded version of the original Adventure Boy Cheapskate, a charming indie adventure game that began development in 2010 when two high school friends decided to create their own story. This deluxe release adds a wealth of new puzzles, an entirely new area to explore, general quality-of-life updates, and a revised special mode that unlocks after you finish the main story. Players take control of Benson, a sharp-tongued teenage cheapskate whose beloved bike has been stolen by a cruel thief. Your goal is simple yet engaging: explore the colorful seaside town of Estivale, talk to its large cast of eccentric residents, and solve a series of clever item-based puzzles to track down the thief and reclaim what was taken.

The game is built around classic “swap-quest” gameplay. You move Benson through top-down, bird’s-eye-view environments using the keyboard, interact with dozens of fleshed-out characters, and trade or use items in creative ways to progress. Every conversation is filled with humorous, witty, and occasionally thoughtful dialogue, and the developers took the time to write unique responses for nearly every combination of inventory item and character. The result is a world that feels lively and reactive rather than empty. Estivale itself is packed with quirky locations, hidden secrets, and memorable oddballs, from beachside vendors and veterinary clinic staff to balloon sellers and mysterious locals. The cartoonish art style is bright, clean, and immediately inviting, while the soundtrack keeps the lighthearted tone rolling as you wander the town.

Although short (most players finish in roughly an hour), the game is dense with content and personality. After the main story, a special mode becomes available in which Benson remembers the previous playthrough and can make different choices, while the other characters remain blissfully unaware—adding a fun layer of meta humor and replayability. Controls are straightforward: directional keys or WASD to move, Shift to run, Z and X to select items, Space to talk or use items, and a few extra keys for pausing, muting, and checking the time. There is no voice acting, but the writing more than carries the experience.

Adventure Boy Cheapskate DX is a pure, non-violent, single-player adventure focused entirely on exploration, conversation, and light puzzle-solving. It was released to help build support for the continuing Adventure Boy series (with a sequel later developed by designer Paul Georghiou). The game runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux and was originally built in Flash, which keeps the system requirements extremely modest.
