Aeterna Noctis
Developer: Aeternum Game Studios S.L
Publisher: Aeternum Game Studios S.L
Release Date: December 14, 2021
Genres: Action, Adventure, Indie, Metroidvania
Aeterna Noctis is a demanding hand-drawn 2D action-platformer that blends classic Metroidvania exploration with intense combat and high-precision platforming. Players take on the role of the King of Darkness, a cursed ruler tasked with reclaiming his lost powers while navigating the vast, interconnected world of Aeterna. Spanning 16 distinct regions, the game offers a non-linear journey filled with secrets, side quests, formidable enemies, and elaborate boss encounters that test both combat skill and platforming mastery.
The narrative unfolds in a world shaped by the supreme god Chaos, who created Aeterna and its inhabitants only to watch them turn against him. In his wrath, Chaos condemned two powerful leaders to an eternal cycle of conflict, branding them the King of Darkness and the Queen of Light. Bound by immortality, they are doomed to battle forever, with each defeat only leading to rebirth and renewed struggle. This epic backdrop drives the King’s quest as he explores a realm suspended between life and death, uncovering deeper truths behind the endless war.
Gameplay centers on fluid movement, ability-based progression, and a difficulty system that scales with the player’s growing skill. Two modes define the experience: Aeterna Mode emphasizes pure action-adventure and Metroidvania exploration, while the exclusive Noctis Mode layers on extreme precision platforming challenges rarely seen in the genre. Hand-drawn frame-by-frame animation brings every environment, character, and animation to life with a distinctive visual style. Voice-acted cutscenes, a rich original soundtrack, and a large map packed with unique areas and mechanics round out the adventure.
The game supports full controller use and is Steam Deck Verified, making it accessible across a range of setups while retaining its challenging core.
