Aegis of Earth: Protonovus Assault is a frantic real-time strategy and tower-defense hybrid that places you in command of humanity’s final strongholds. Set fifty years after the Silent Apocalypse—a catastrophic event that unleashed waves of monstrous creatures and introduced the mysterious energy source known as Altenite—the game challenges you to protect circular, heavily fortified cities from relentless assaults.

Your cities are built in concentric rings that can be rotated during battle. You plan and construct defenses in advance, placing cannons, missile batteries, lasers, gatling guns, and other heavy weapons around the perimeter. Once combat begins, enemies stream in from all directions. You must spin the city’s rings in real time to bring the right weapons to bear, manage limited resources, and adapt on the fly. A standout mechanic lets you merge identical weapons placed in a line, dramatically boosting their damage output and creating powerful focused barrages.

Between waves you manage the city’s economy, collect taxes, upgrade facilities, unlock new technology, and expand your arsenal. The presentation leans heavily into anime aesthetics, with colorful character designs, dramatic cutscenes, and a cast of eccentric defenders fighting for survival. The tone mixes high-stakes action with lighter character moments as you prepare for the approaching “Altered States” and increasingly dangerous Protonovus assaults.

Originally released in Japan in 2015 as Zettai Geigeki Wars: Metropolis Defenders, the Western version arrived on Steam in 2016 under the Aegis of Earth: Protonovus Assault title. It is a single-player experience focused on tactical planning, precise timing, and creative weapon placement rather than pure tower-building.
