Acorn Assault: Rodent Revolution is a quirky, lighthearted turn-based strategy game that reimagines the French Revolution as a nut-fueled uprising among squirrels. Players step into the role of Charles DeMontesquirrel, a fed-up forest dweller who refuses to pay the tyrannical acorn tax imposed by King Lois the Umpteenth and his queen, Marie Antoinutte. What begins as a defiant stand against a tax collector quickly escalates into a full-blown rodent revolution as Charles rallies an army of armed squirrels to topple the monarchy and restore fairness to the woodland kingdom.
Gameplay centers on a grid-based battlefield where both sides place units and defenses each turn. Soldiers act as the primary damage dealers while barricades absorb hits and shield key positions. Matching three identical units adjacent to one another merges them into a stronger version, rewarding careful placement and planning. Acorns serve as a resource that can be spent on power-ups such as healing or extra defenses. Each of the 25 campaign levels challenges players with increasingly clever AI opponents, and the story is divided into five worlds, each featuring a unique boss with special abilities that alter the rules of engagement. The hand-drawn art style, charming animations, and period-inspired details—like powdered wigs on squirrels—give the game a distinct, whimsical personality.
Beyond the single-player campaign, the game supports both local and online multiplayer. In multiplayer, players can choose from characters unlocked during the story, each bringing unique abilities that change how matches play out. The rules are simple enough for newcomers to grasp quickly yet offer enough tactical depth for repeated play sessions. A dynamic original soundtrack complements the action, and the overall tone remains light, humorous, and deliberately historically inaccurate.
