Artemis: God-Queen of The Hunt
Developer: James Leakos
Publisher: James Leakos
Release Date: May 29, 2019
Genres: Action, Adventure, Indie, Platformer
Artemis: God-Queen of The Hunt drops you into the shattered remnants of Olympia, a once-divine realm reduced to floating ruins after a catastrophic war between gods, humanity, and machines. You play as Artemis, the sole survivor of the conflict, who now moves through this broken sky-city as both hunter and hunted. The world is less a place to explore on foot and more a vast, precarious airspace of crumbling platforms, drifting debris, and mechanical threats. Birds still circle the ruins, offering a strange, fleeting sense of companionship amid the desolation, while robots prowl the heights as relentless prey and predators.
This is a hand-drawn, ultra-hard twitch platformer built almost entirely around airborne movement. Artemis has two jumps, a dash, and an air-pause that lets her momentarily freeze in mid-flight. These tools turn the sky itself into the primary arena. Levels are designed as intricate three-dimensional puzzles of space and timing rather than traditional ground-based obstacle courses. Success demands precise control, rapid decision-making, and a mastery of both movement and bowwork as you hunt down robotic enemies while navigating treacherous gaps and collapsing architecture. The controls are tight and responsive by design, rewarding split-second reactions and punishing hesitation. Most of the challenge lives in the air; solid ground is scarce and rarely a place of safety.
The game leans into its difficulty without apology. The tutorial is deliberately short and incomplete, and an easy mode exists only to be discouraged. Hand-drawn art and animation give the floating ruins a distinctive, almost fragile beauty that contrasts sharply with the mechanical threats and the unforgiving precision required to survive. Progression comes from learning the airspace, refining your timing, and internalizing the rhythm of jumps, dashes, and airborne pauses until complex sequences become fluid.
Olympia is not a place for the faint of heart. Artemis: God-Queen of The Hunt is a focused, high-skill platformer that treats the sky as both battlefield and puzzle, asking players to become the god-queen of a ruined world through nothing more than sharp reflexes and perfect control.
