AMID EVIL VR is a full virtual reality reimagining of the acclaimed 2019 retro first-person shooter, rebuilt from the ground up rather than simply ported. You step into the role of a once-branded heretic who has been chosen as champion to reclaim sacred weapons and ancient lands across seven distinct episodes. Each episode presents its own unique environments, enemy types, and visual identity, ranging from dark fantasy temples to surreal, psychedelic, and sci-fi-tinged realms. The campaign spans roughly eight hours across twenty-one sprawling, non-linear levels filled with secrets, ancient lore, and seven intense boss encounters.
Combat is pure high-energy boomer-shooter chaos translated into VR. You dual-wield an arsenal of ludicrous magical weapons that can be overcharged with the souls of fallen enemies, swinging them in either hand or combining them for devastating effects. Weapons include everything from close-range axes and melee tools to explosive devices and a literal planet launcher. Enemies hunt you aggressively across land, sea, and air with adaptive AI, forcing constant movement, weapon swapping, and spatial awareness. Visible hands let you punch, grab, and interact more physically, while a weapon wheel slows time for selection. Comfort options, cheats, and extensive settings support a classic “golden age” PC experience inside the headset.
Built in Unreal Engine 4, the game delivers colorful, atmospheric, retro-styled visuals with a dynamic original soundtrack composed by Andrew Hulshult. It is a single-player, VR-only title that requires a compatible headset and motion controllers (Valve Index, Meta Quest 2, HTC Vive, Rift S, and others via SteamVR). The result is a spiritual successor to classic titles like Heretic and Hexen that feels native to virtual reality—fast, brutal, exploratory, and packed with over-the-top magical firepower.
