Alter Army is a hardcore, fast-paced 2D action platformer overflowing with punchy combat and satisfying game feel. Set in the ruins of a dying civilization, you play as one of the last survivors racing to claim the remaining resources before the universe collapses. Your mission is to explore strange biomes, collect powerful crystals, and uncover why this world is falling apart—and why you were drawn here.
The core loop is simple but intense. Dash and fight through hand-crafted levels filled with enemies. Every time you grab a crystal, walls slam shut and lock you into a closed arena with waves of monsters. You must clear the room to progress. Combat rewards aggression: higher combos make you hit harder, move faster, and recover health more quickly. The game balances its difficulty with health packs, helpful drones, and dynamic adjustments so the challenge stays tough but fair.
You can choose from four distinct characters, each with unique primary attacks, secondary moves, and special abilities. One memorable fighter even wields a guitar as a weapon, delivering satisfying electric-twang hits. Levels are packed with nearly 50 different monsters, each featuring its own attack patterns. At the end of every biome you face a unique boss with distinctive movesets, and the game also includes mini-bosses that appear multiple times with different behaviors.
Exploration takes place across four themed biomes—Forest, Snow, Mutated Forest, and Hell. Each area is split into vast sections filled with the remnants of a once-thriving civilization, hidden secrets, and NPCs who share their own backstories. The confident pixel-art style and fluid animations give the world personality and make every dash, jump, and strike feel responsive.
Created by the two-person indie studio Vague Pixels (two teenagers from Jaipur, India, who started the project while still in school), Alter Army is a short but energetic debut. It delivers arena-locked combat, stylish presentation, and a strong sense of momentum in a compact package.
