ADOM (Ancient Domains of Mystery)
Developer: Thomas Biskup, Jochen Terstiege, Zeno Rogue, Krzysztof Dycha, Lucas Dieguez
Publisher: Thomas Biskup
Release Date: November 16, 2015 (Steam Deluxe edition; original version first released in 1994)
Genres: Adventure, Indie, RPG, Strategy (Traditional Roguelike)
ADOM is a deep, turn-based traditional roguelike that blends procedural dungeon exploration with a persistent overworld, rich lore, and meaningful character progression. Set in the fantasy land of Ancardia, you control a lone adventurer drawn to the mountainous Drakalor Chain, where the forces of Chaos have begun to spill into the world. Your goal is to uncover the source of this corruption, confront the spreading chaos, and ultimately decide the fate of the realm—whether as a champion of order, a wielder of chaotic power, or something far stranger.
Character creation offers tremendous variety. Choose from a wide range of races (including dwarves, mist elves, drakelings, hurthlings, orcs, trolls, ratlings, and more) and more than twenty classes such as fighters, elementalists, assassins, chaos knights, and duelists. Each combination shapes your starting equipment, skills, attributes, and overall playstyle. Starsigns, talents, skills, and a point-based generation system further allow for highly customized builds. Combat is strategic and flexible, supporting melee weapons, ranged attacks, spells, mindcraft, alchemy, crafting, and divine prayers. You can recruit companions, smith gear, worship gods, or pursue less conventional paths.
The world is vast and full of secrets. Explore towns filled with NPCs and quests, procedurally generated dungeons, elemental temples, graveyards, ancient ruins, towers, and other unique locations. Hundreds of monsters, thousands of item variants, and a signature corruption system add layers of risk and reward. Corruption can grant powerful mutations and abilities while slowly transforming your character, forcing constant choices between power and self-preservation. Hunger, disease, traps, and alignment shifts further heighten the challenge. The game supports multiple wildly different endings, including driving Chaos back, ascending to godhood, or embracing darker destinies.
Originally developed as a free ASCII-based roguelike starting in 1994, ADOM gained a dedicated following for being one of the first in the genre to feature vibrant towns, dialogue, and quests alongside traditional permadeath dungeon crawling. After a successful crowdfunding campaign, the Steam Deluxe version modernized the experience with optional tile-based graphics, original music and sound, an improved interface, and the ability to switch freely between ASCII and graphical modes. Additional Steam features include achievements, customizable difficulty options (such as disabling hunger or corruption, or adjusting monster and treasure rates), story mode with save and load support, weekly challenge mode, exploration mode, player ghosts that can be exchanged between installations, and shared high scores.
ADOM rewards careful planning, experimentation, and repeated playthroughs. Its combination of procedural content, deep systems, and a living world of quests and consequences creates immense replay value. Whether you prefer classic terminal aesthetics or a modern graphical presentation, it remains one of the most complete and influential traditional roguelikes available.
